The Church and the World by Adam Mumpower

Dear Men of SouthLake Church,

This fall, we will once again have our Men of Iron Breakfast. Meeting from September – May, the men of SouthLake Church meet in the Fellowship Hall at 8:00 a.m. (usually on the first Saturday of the month) for a time of food, fellowship, study, and prayer. Our men enjoy a delicious breakfast together ($5/person), and I (Adam) will lead a book study.  For the 2015-2016 year, we will be studying Ashamed of the Gospel – When the Church Becomes Like the World (third edition) by John MacArthur.

This is one of the best books that I read in seminary, and it is still very relevant for today. MacArthur writes with great passion and conviction on a subject that we need to talk more about. Ask these questions: What has happened to the preaching of the gospel in the church today? To what degree has the world impacted the church? To what degree has the world impacted me?

Here is an exerpt from the preface of the first edition of the book:

“Acceptability in the culture and increased church attendance have subtly but steadily usurped holiness and true worship as the primary objectives of our church gatherings. Preaching the Word and boldly confronting sin are seen as archaic, ineffectual means of winning the world. After all, those things actually drive most people away. Why not entice people into the fold by offering what they will want, creating a friendly, comfortable environment, and catering to the very desires that drive their strongest urges? As if we might get unconverted worldlings to accept Jesus by somehow making him more likable or making his message less offensive…That kind of thinking badly skews the mission of the church. The Great Commission is not a marketing manifesto. True evangelism does not require salesmen but prophets. It is the Word of God, not any earthly enticement, that plants the seed for the new birth (1 Pet. 1:23). We gain nothing but God’s displeasure if we seek to remove the offense of the cross (cf. Gal. 5:11).”

Books can be purchased on Sunday mornings at the back table.  Please enclose $17 in the envelope provided and put in the basket.  Please make sure your name is on the outside of the envelope.  Open discussion from all men is encouraged at the study. A time of group prayer concludes each meeting. The dates for the 2015-2016 year are:

2015: Sep 12, Oct 3, Nov 7, Dec 5
2016: Jan 9, Feb 6, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7

Hope you will join us!
