East Charlotte Presbyterian Church (Church Plant)

Tyler was born in The Wild Wild West (Dodge City KS). After graduating from Kansas State University in Manhattan KS (The Little Apple), Tyler voyaged to the East Coast to marry his beautiful bride (Carrie). Tyler obtained his Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte NC in 2007, and then took a call to shepherd students and faculty members at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte as the RUF Campus Minister from 2007-2013. Tyler then took a call to plant a church in Central Carolina Presbytery on the East Side of Charlotte in June of 2013. Tyler & Carrie have 4 lovely and rambunctious children; Maggie, Henry, Haven, and Phinehas (and a dog named Bella, and a cat named Nugget).

Tyler LOVES anything written by CS Lewis (favorite = “Till We Have Faces“).  Additionally Tyler thoroughly enjoys Redemption Accomplished & Applied by John Murray, The Supper of the LambA Culinary Reflection by Robert Farrar Capon, and Critique Magazine published by Ransom Fellowship.  Frisbee? …Yes Please!  Hiking and/or a walk in the woods? …absolutely!  Bread and wine? …you betchya!  When it comes to music Tyler believes that The Oh Hellos are genius, Josh Garrels is thought-provoking, and there’s something pretty darn intriguing about the Red Hot Chili Peppers!  The best movie ever is a tie between The Princess Bride and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Our Missionary Family to South Asia is the Calvin & Geeta: Calvin was born in India, where his parents were Mission to the World missionaries serving with the Bohogpur Children's Home. Geeta grew up in the children's home. Calvin returned to work at the home in 1997, and they were married in 1998. They have worked with the home for more that 10 years, and they were also part of a church-planting team for several years.

While helping in fundraising and administration, he sees his most important role as giving spiritual encouragement and guidance to the staff and children of the home. Calvin & Geeta lead in house fellowship in their neighborhood and are active in the leadership of a new congregation in their town. Geeta works in various projects to help children of poor families in their area.

Th Bhogpur Children's Home in India works to see underprivileged children, especially from leprosy-affected communities, cared for, educated and morally nurtured to become well adjusted in today's world as living witnesses of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As Executive Director of the Children's Home, Calvin has the responsibility for the financial position of the Children's Home and the spiritual atmosphere among the children and staff. He leads devotions for the children on a weekly basis, and holds meeting with staff regularly. He also oversees the sponsorship program and development work for the home.

Ministering to the Karen people from Thailand in Greensboro, NC

Thank you for praying for the Friendly Avenue Karen Church here in Greensboro, NC.  The church can no longer be called a plant; it has become a growing, viable, church, thanks to the grace of God and your faithful prayers.

Part of pastoral ministry is serving families going through difficult times.  Our ministry includes a large food distribution to the Karen neighborhood families and the jobless. The Karen pastor, Hsar, and his new wife are already on their own reaching out to kids in their neighborhood, holding outreach opportunities in their homes and the homes of others.

Regarding church ministry, we have a rather large percentage of young Karen people attending our church, many from non-Christian backgrounds.  We have just started a Karen youth ministry and worship band under the leadership of a capable young man.  This is further attracting more young people.  Also, we have started citizenship classes as an outreach and service to Karen refugees working to gain U.S. citizenship.

This material is based on the children’s catechism. Praise God, hundreds of churches, as well as Christian and public schools are using this material today."

Mission To the World: Minnesota (Indian Reservations)

Bill and Susan Carr met within a Navigator ministry at East Tennessee State University.  After their marriage in 1977, they became involved in the Presbyterian Church in America.  They began their careers as teachers.  Susan taught until God blessed them with two daughters.  Bill continued to teach for 10 years.

Sensing a call to missions, Bill and Susan accepted a short-term call to an Australian church planting team.  Upon return from Australia, Bill entered seminary.  Ministry to other cultures was still their desire.

The Carrs were assigned to South Africa from 1997 until 2010 with MTW.   They equipped nationals for church ministry through theological education, children’s ministries, and Christian education.  Bill served as team leader for other South African missionaries.

Now Bill and Susan are serving MTW in the most challenging ministry of their careers.  They are working with Native Americans in Minnesota.  One of the greatest needs of the Native American church is spiritual leadership.  The Carrs are helping to train leaders through the Mokahum Ministry Center (MMC).

MMC requires a high degree of personal mentorship and training in Biblical subjects, life skills, and ministry skills for its students.  Bill serves MMC as the educational director and teaches several modules.  Susan teaches study skills.  Both personally mentor students, a key component of the program.

Mission To the World: Church Planting Team Leader, Southern Chile

Johan is working in Santiago as a mentor and coach to the young men who are pastoring new churches.  We have begun that job by inviting the couples to informal dinners just to get to know them and begin building relationships, and we have been encouraged at the joy and passion in so many of their hearts as they respond to the calling God has placed on their lives. They are spread out across the city so we travel a lot, both visiting their churches and adapting to the schedules of these young families trying to take their children's needs into account too.

Ukraine Medical Outreach

In our case God called us to minister in Ukraine but what we did not realize he was also bringing other people from other countries who would become more and more the focus of our ministry.

Our initial focus was working with Ukrainian medical professionals. As time moved forward we began to minister not only to the caretakers but the patients themselves, particularly those vulnerable children with disabilities and living with HIV and their families. Now God has expanded our ministry to include students of the medical profession both Ukrainian and foreigners studying in Ukraine.

What this means is we will be doing a lot more traveling both inside Ukraine and beyond. At the same time we are dealing with political instability of Ukraine. Therefore our board thought it was wise to encourage us to be more mobile.

When we moved to Ukraine we had three almost adult children who have now definitely left the nest. Most of the things we shipped back to the USA belonged to them plus those things that were precious to us and we did not want to get stuck in Ukraine if the situation deteriorated further.

We definitely believe God is not finished with His work through us and Ukraine Medical Outreach in Ukraine, but is actually expanding it. We are privileged to be part of what God is doing through medicine in Ukraine and beyond.

Therefore our work will most definitely be continuing and we are excited to learn what God has already prepared for us.

Thank you very much for your years of support and we continue to look forward to partnering with SouthLake in the future.
